Ankeny Newborn Photographer

I’ve been finding so much joy in photographing families in their homes. It just feels like the right place for family to be. I recently had the pleasure of capturing the magic of a newborn session right before Christmas for the Cosselman family in Ankeny, Iowa. Their session was heartwarming, filled with the joy of the holiday season and the warmth that comes with welcoming a newborn into your family.

Photographing newborns in the comfort of their own home allows for genuine moments and a relaxed atmosphere. The family’s home was decked in twinkling lights and holiday decorations, providing a cozy ambiance. Even though their nursery wasn’t quite finished, it still had amazing light and made for the perfect spot for 75% of their session. I always tell my families we don’t need a ton of space or the whole house to shoot in. We just needed one room with good light!

Near the end of their session, we moved to the living room where I caught a few photos of them on the couch. I love that you can see framed photos from their engagement session and wedding in the background. It’s their whole story leading up to their current reality.

Preparing for your own at-home session

If you’re considering an at-home newborn session, especially during the holiday season, here are some tips to help you prepare:

  1. Personalize Your Space: Infuse your home with personal touches that reflect your family’s personality. Whether it’s a cherished blanket, a favorite stuffed animal, or holiday decorations, these details add a special touch to your photographs.
  2. Embrace Natural Light: Choose a time of day when your home is naturally well-lit. Natural light contributes to a soft and flattering glow in your images. Consider opening curtains or blinds to maximize the available light.
  3. Dress Comfortably: Wear clothing that not only complements your personal style but also allows you to move comfortably. The goal is to capture natural moments, and being at ease in your attire will contribute to the overall relaxed feel of the session.
  4. Incorporate Seasonal Elements: If your session falls during a specific season or holiday, consider incorporating relevant elements into your photos. In our case, the Christmas decorations added a festive touch to some of the images.
  5. Prepare Siblings and Pets: If you have older children or furry family members, prepare them for the session by explaining what to expect. Encourage them to be themselves and interact naturally with the newest family member.
