3 Secrets to Engagement Session Poses

February 10, 2021

Many of my couples’ biggest questions before their engagement session is: “How will we know what to do for poses?”

Many photographers do put their couples in to the same poses for every session. They walk you through everything from where to stand down to the perfect placement of your hand. While this can create some form of “perfection,” I would argue that it doesn’t feel natural or good to everyone. These ultra perfect photos have led you to think that you need to know what you are doing to get photos you love, but that’s just not true!

Here’s three secrets to what really makes for good “poses” at engagement sessions:

1. Guidance over posing

I love to give my couples guidance throughout their session. This looks like telling you to do something very natural like “take a walk together” or “wrap each other in a hug.” These are things that feel easy and allow you to get comfortable in front of the camera.

2. No one is exactly like you

No one is exactly the same as you and definitely not the same as you and your fiance together. You are a unique pair. This is why I believe in guiding you to do things that are natural for you to do together. When you’re focused on wrapping the love of your life in a hug, you’re not thinking about how it “should” look. How a couple interacts with each other will be different every time and that’s what will make your photos special to you.

3. Take off the pressure

There is absolutely no pressure to be perfect. It is actually the lack of perfection that makes something unique. You want to feel like you when you look at your photos. How you interact is exactly right. I am here to capture you as you are for the generations to come.
