This fall was filled with engagement sessions for my 2025 wedding couples. Michaela and Derek’s session was a special one that took a bit more coordination. Derek lives in Chicago, while Michaela is in Iowa City. I’m so glad we were able to find a time to get them both in Iowa City. A balance of nature and a little downtown vibe was perfect for them.
Right from the start, Michaela and Derek shared that they’re not the most comfortable in front of a camera. It’s such a common feeling, and I reassured them that a bit of shyness can be an asset. In fact, that bit of awkwardness helps couples lean into each other, creating such genuine, tender moments. For me, capturing these natural interactions is the heart of an engagement session.
We started at the University of Iowa’s iconic Pentacrest, where the historic steps brought a classic, timeless touch. I love photographing couples in places with such character, and the Pentacrest offered just that. From there, we strolled to Basta, where they had one of their first dates. This was the perfect spot to take a few photos, capturing the cozy and romantic vibe over cocktails.
One thing I always suggest for couples after an engagement session? Go out for a celebratory dinner! It’s a wonderful way to soak in the day and savor this season of life. Michaela and Derek did just that with dinner at Basta to keep the memories going.
